Make your own Beef Wennington
I’m not sure if you are familiar with the legendary McDonald’s sandwich named after the Bulls’ center Bill Wennington during the second wave of the team’s glory years, so I thought I’d bring it back into the spotlight for everyone. Despite the popular campaigns to bring the sandwich (a beef patty topped with cheese, onions, barbeque sauce and a slice of Canadian bacon—he’s Canadian) back, the folks at McDonald’s don’t seem to agree with it’s popularity. Frankly, I don’t get it. It sounds delicious.
All this talk about the Beef Wennington not only makes me laugh every time I see him on TV or hear him on the radio, but also makes me fantasize about what kind of sandwich would be named after me when I’m helping the Chicago Bulls win their 7th NBA title? Questions flood my mind. Would it have to incorporate ingredients from my hometown/country (hot dogs, deep-dish pizza, beef, corn, soy)? Would it represent my style of cooking and/or basketball (scrappy and locally driven)? Or would it just be a sandwich that I really enjoy eating?
I like that last option. But the sammy still needs to reflect me in some way. Man this is hard. No wonder they pay those marketing guys the big bucks. Here is what I came up with. I’m not sure exactly how to make it to perfection, but I’ll leave that up to the McDonald’s people. They’re the experts, after all.
The Big N’ Changy:
Melts-in-your-mouth BBQ beef brisket, bourbon infused BBQ sauce, crispy slaw of red cabbage, carrots, chopped jicama and green papaya dressed with spicy mustard, sweetened lime juice, zest, fish sauce and garlic all on a toasted pretzel bun. Served with sweet potato fries seasoned with sea salt and curry powder with a ketchup-mustard dipping sauce.
Whoa. I may have gone overboard. But that’s what making your own namesake sammy is all about! Try it out and share your namesakes! I’d love to hear them.
